Personal development or self help is best defined as any conscious
pursuit to better one's life. This includes all aspects of your life:
your health, your mental well-being, interpersonal interactions,
career, and any other needs, values or goals you may want to fulfil.
The word contentment exists in any dictionaries. Unfortunately, for
most, it doesn't exist in real life. This may sound crazy, but this is
really true. As a human being, you may be driven to continuously strive
to be a better person for your own sake, and to be successful in life.
As a matter of fact, this is the very essence of the personal
development skills that should be within your system.
Thus, it is required that you learn how you can improve and develop
personal development skills, for you to become a happier, more
contented, peaceful person in life. Self help and Personal development
has a rich history that includes influences from Ancient Greek
philosophy, Eastern and Western religions, Existentialism,
Psychoanalysis, Gestalt Therapy, and Humanistic Psychology. The
personal development industry is an important one, and yet, many people
don't recognize the need for it in their lives. Maybe it is the
perception they have about personal development or self-help, or maybe
they just are not aware of the possibilities for themselves.
It seems though, the biggest misunderstanding people have is the kind
of affects personal development and selfhelp has on our life⦠on every
aspect of our life. In many ways, we are all battling our own struggles
over ourselves and the need to improve our lives to become acceptable
more acceptable, which mostly applies to ourselves, and not the
perceptions of others. Structures self help is something we can all
indulge in.
Improving your self or striving to be a better person is not that bad,
although it often does not bring peace, and peace is required to be
genuinely happy, so guidance is required so that the help you give
yourself is of genuine benefit, and not just another way of causing
stress and self disappointment. You may want to be a better you. You
may want to be better in your chosen field or career. You may want to
be perceived, or perceive yourself, as a better individual. You may
just want to learn more and grow beyond the perception you have at the
moment.
Becoming conscious and working towards developing your skills can help
you figure out if how you are, is how you want to be. Aiming to be a
better person towards yourself or your society can do you no harm, as
long as it is done with personal kindness and self respect. Today many
concepts and theories in personal development have begun to be tested
scientifically, especially therapies like Cognitive-Behavioural
Therapy, as well as research in Positive Thinking Psychology, Cognitive
Psychology, and Neuroscience.
Some people Consciously develop themselves more purposefully than
others through much more awareness of their ways and behaviours. Some
take more responsibility for the direction of their lives. They don't
just accept the status quo, but instead act purposefully to make a
difference in their life. Personal development exercises are skills
that will certainly give you the life you desire. Through personal
development exercises, you will be able to discover things about
yourself and the things you want to change in your life.
Many people go through life trying to achieve their values, but often
end up following the same patterns and routines that have become
conditioned over and over again. Some never consciously question their
thoughts and behaviours, they just accept them and float through life
expecting different results to come.
Personal development tips are a great way to kick-start your personal
growth and to push yourself to new levels of achievement and
fulfilment. If you're someone who's interested in personal development
and personal growth, you're probably always in search of effective
strategies for stimulating growth. You're probably also looking for
strategies which will ensure your personal growth and help you to
achieve results.
Personal development is sometimes referred to as self-development or
personal growth, and it traditionally covers a broad set of areas to
improve. It is not however something that you gain from formal
education, though the process of gathering knowledge is fundamental to
growth. Essentially, it is about making conscious decisions about
everything that you do in line with what you want to experience, the
way that you think, and the way that you react to situations.
Personal development goals are designed to facilitate the desired
changes or improvement in one's life. Like any other goals, it is
important that you continually aspire for change in an inspiring and
uplifting way within one's self, while also aiming to achieve whatever
it is you need to accomplish. However, it will require time,
discipline, and effort on your part in order to realize your personal
development goals. A personal development plan is a goal setting
method, yet it takes a slightly different approach that is more
effective and suitable than just following the common goal setting
methods.
That is why a personal development plan works best for those with
leadership roles because goal setting is a definite must for those who
are serious about achieving success. Yet, many of those in leadership
roles don't set goals for their personal development. Many have goals
for their careers and how they can move up the ladder and achieve more
professionally, yet they don't have any personal development plans and
this is the missing key to their success.
Personal development plan is like a map that will direct you to where
you want to go. If you create a personal development plan for your own
life, there will be power in it, something to follow and stick with
when you face obstacles. Decide to take your life seriously enough to
spend a little time evaluating what you want and how you will get it.
A Self Help plan or template will be very useful to create a personal
starting point. However, the actual content will be decided by you. You
have to know exactly how you want to feel, how you want to grow, and
how you plan to achieve it. A personal development or self-help plan is
definitely a serious issue. Make your development plan personal and
inspiring. Once you have determined your goals in life, the next step
is for you to make your own roadmap to get to experience it. The plan
will serve as your guide in achieving your goals.
Then Put your plan into action. Putting your personal development plan
into action is the most difficult step in improving your life.
Nevertheless, you can usually make it a lot easier and simpler just by
starting with small steps one at a time. Of course, it is always better
and more effective to start with small steps, rather than starting with
big steps that could become overwhelming.
Be honest and responsible. You need to take responsibility in
everything and anything that you do. Accept all your shortcomings
wholeheartedly, and see what you can identify that you can learn from
any experience, to help you in the future. You also need to be
open-minded when it comes to the outcomes and results of your pursuit
in becoming more like you want to be and perhaps become a more
successful person. In doing so, you can easily accept any possible
perceived failures and challenges and simply move forward. Changing the
quality of your life is not an instant process but rather a gradual and
sometimes a slow one.
You really have to be aware of how you can slowly change the quality of
your life and your perceptions, as well as develop personal development
skills in order to be a happier and more peaceful individual in time.
Self Help has never been more alive than today. Ever since humans first
became conscious they have been in pursuit of happiness, satisfaction
and peace. Throughout our written history we have learned a lot about
different ways we can improve our lives, and become more conscious.
Equipped with the science of modern psychology, humans have more
resources and information available than ever before on how to live a
better and more fulfilling life.
But even with all this great information and knowledge, many people are
probably a little confused on where or how they should get started.
That is a big reason why I write on this article about this book. I
want to start the process of filtering out the ideas that are no longer
relevant, and highlight and teach the ones that have persisted, and
proven to be effective. Here are just a few common assumptions in self
help and personal development to help get you started.
Things to be clear about with
personal development:
You are clearly the one mostly responsible for how you live your life.
People who are on the personal development path usually understand that
their thoughts and actions play a big role in what they get out of
life. It is required for you to define what you want before you can
move towards it and achieve it. Many people often go through life
aimlessly, without a clear destination in mind. Ultimately, however, it
is required that you identify your values in life, before you can
attract and achieve them.
Short-term perceived costs can lead to longer-term, much more
satisfying benefits. Actively trying to improve the quality of one's
life is not a simple process; it often requires conscious choice making
and sometimes physical effort, and requires even facing and accepting
perceived failure. There is no magic bullet, tricks instant success
blueprints for you to follow. You need to be willing to invest
conscious awareness onto yourself, which requires internal honesty and
integrity, as if you are not honest with yourself, how can you truly
grow beyond where you are.
You are always growing and changing. The real truth is that whether
people play an active and intense role in their self help and personal
development or not, we are always growing, evolving, changing and
developing as unique individuals. We are, as a species, all on some
kind of personal growth and development path/process, however it is
clear that some are more consciously involved in creating their destiny
than others.
The thoughts you indulge in clearly and actively matter. Usually people
perceive their regular thoughts as immaterial and perhaps
inconsequential, but that really couldn't be further from the truth of
how it is. How you think and perceive very strongly influences how
people perceive and therefore act. And obviously, how you and others
act determines the regular results you and others get out of life.
Your habitual patterns matter. Just as we should focus on and become
conscious of our thoughts, we should also identify and discover,
through exploration, new habits we can adopt. As the old saying still
goes, "If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll always get
what you've always got." More often than not, we won't know from
experience what the correct course of action is, or may be, in any
situation, until we have experimented, and tried new or different
things.
The present moment, and only the present moment, is the only place a
choice can be made. Every non-conscious and conscious decision or
choice we make, and every action or reaction that comes from that,
unfolds in the present moment. The more present you are in the moment,
and the more conscious you are, the greater choice you have within your
day-to-day actions.
Always learn from the past. While the past has gone, so we can't change
it, we can of course often look back with conscious awareness and learn
from that/our past choices, perceived mistakes and see them all as
learning experiences.
Always, always be optimistic about the future. We can't know what the
possibilities are for the future, or what it may bring, but if we
always consistently remain optimistic, hopeful we can allow ourselves
to consistently act in ways that help to create that outcome.
Regularly, this kind of thinking will become a kind of self-fulfilling,
self created prophecy.
Obviously I cannot adequately sum up the whole personal development
movement and self help process in just a few bullet-points, but I think
I have given you some of the main or key concepts and beliefs that you
will recognise and learn about throughout your own self development. If
you're new to all this, please keep all these ideas in your conscious
awareness, and over time, you will learn about them and come to accept
then, and see them in greater depth, and see the true meaning in
them.
